Forever My Love - by Shakera Baxter

Amy is a simple, yet complicated person. She is used to getting her way most of the time. She has 2 wonderful parents, lots and lots of friends, and a life that most kids would die to get.  She is the only child, but has so much stuff to do that she never felt alone. Amy is an African-American teen, who loves to play sports and talk on the phone. Her hobbies are shopping, playing the piano, and writing poetry.

Amy was never a problem child she always made straight A’s and B’s. While she was in class one day, she started daydreaming and thinking about the days when she was little and how she would play with her cousin Samuel, but Sam died a couple of years ago. He was like a brother to her though she had none. She felt so said after she daydream that she decided to write him a poem, hoping that he could read it from heaven.

I Miss You

When I think of you it makes me so sad, you were the closet thing to a brother I ever had.

But now you’re gone I don’t know what to say. Why did God take your precious life away?

When I got in fights you had my back, but when I got in trouble you cut me no slack.

I wonder what you would possibly say, if you were to see my life today.

I miss you man, I’m telling the truth; it hurt a lot of people when you left, I’m living proof.

I never knew that you would leave so early, I thought you would be around for another 10 years or so, surely.

When I think of it, it seems like yesterday, when we would go outside and laugh and play.

Now that you’re gone sometimes I feel lonely, you were more than my cousin we where like homies.

All I have is sweet memories, like that time you ran into that tree.

Or when you used to make me mad, and when you got in trouble for being bad.

Or when I used to get on your nerves, and when you fell and hit that curb.

I see those images but they never quit, I can’t stop thinking about you though I try to forget.

Maybe I’ll see you in heaven someday, that is if you ever made it that way.

I wonder if others think of you like I do, but never forget, I Miss You.

When she was finished the bell had rang so she ran into the gym for her basketball practice. While Amy was coming home from basketball practice about an hour or two later, she came home to notice that someone or something was making a loud banging noise. She opened the door to find her mother on the ground with her dad on top of her getting ready to hit her mom in the face. “Stop, this!”, Amy said. She ran to her mom and held up her head to find that her face was all red and she had a black eye. “Dad, you did this to mom? Why? You always told me that men or boys should never hit women no matter what they might do to them, and here you are hitting mom!” Amy said with intense feeling. Amy helped her mom off the floor with tears welded in her eyes. “Get out! I don’t need this; I am packing my bags and leaving tonight! I want a divorce!”,

“ Amy get your stuff you are coming with me.”, Amy’s mom said, while she looked at her husband with madness in her eyes. As Amy packed her bags she replayed the scene over and over in her head. Then she started to think of the things that lied ahead, she started asking herself questions- “ What school will I go to? What about my friends? What about my room and this house? What about my boyfriend?”

She would soon find the answers in the future.

That night Amy and her mom went over to her grandmother’s house. She told her grandmother everything that had happened. “I am never going back to that man again!”, her mom said as she cried in Amy’s lap. “ It’s okay momma.” Amy said. “How long has this been going on?”, her grandma asked. “For the past 2 years.” Amy looked up at her mom with a surprised look on her face because she always thought her mom was the type of woman that would fight back if anyone put their hands on her without her permission. To see that she let him hurt her like that was a total shock.

“Momma where are we going to go?” Amy asked “We are moving out of the state.” Her mom said with an unsure look. Amy knew that her mom did not want to leave but then she knew that she could not stay. She could not even think of what she would do without her father, or her friends.

The next morning her mom had called her job and asked to be transferred to New York, her request was accepted and they were going to leave in 1 week. The last days in Texas were bleak ones, she was leaving her boyfriend whom she fell deeply in love with even though she was scared to tell him, and she was leaving her best friend Emily, who she has known for seven years. She would miss her teachers and her principal who always gave her candy just because. On the last day at her school, Emily gave Amy a surprise going away party in the cafeteria, and all of her friends were there, they gave her gifts and cards.  Emily had given Amy a bracelet and anklet that said best friends forever. Amy started to cry as Emily gave it to her. She really did not want to leave, but she knew she had to go, for her mother. When the party was over she started to walk away from the cafeteria when all of a sudden her boyfriend, Zack, and yelled out her name. She stopped and turned around and waited for him to come up to her.  He came up to her and said “ I have something to give you. Here it is a gold locket, I was going to wait for your birthday, but since you are leaving I thought it was a good time to give it to you.” Amy started smiling. Then she said “Thank you, for everything.” She walked away when Zack caught up with her and said “ I love you.” Then he gazed into her eyes and they kissed. Amy saw fireworks while she was kissing Zack. Then she heard her mom honk the horn. “ I, I, I gotta go.” She said stuttering. She was on a natural high for the next 3 hours.

Amy’s mom dropped her off at her dad’s knowing this would be her last time she would see him. When she went over there she felt unsafe and scared. She felt like she was in extreme danger and wanted to leave. Her dad started to talk to her, but every time she looked at him he looked like a totally different person. He was not the same person she had seen for the past 14 years; she looked at him in a whole new way now. She went to her room for the last time and felt her walls and thought of all the memories she had in her house. Then she thought of all the good times she had with her parents “It was all a lie.” She said as one tear rolled down her cheek. Then she heard her mom honk the horn. Amy’s dad said “ I love you and I am here for you whenever, never be scared to talk to me about anything, I will always be here, never forget that.” Then he kissed her on her forehead and she walked out without showing any feelings to the car, her dad got her bags and put them in his soon to be ex wife’s car. Then he went up to her window and said “I will miss you.” Amy’s mom drove away without saying anything.

About two hours later they got to the airport and they were waiting for their plane to be called. Amy sat down and got back up because she felt she was sitting on something hard, she looked down in the chair but did not find anything. Then she put her hands in her back pocket and pulled out the locket that Zack had gave her. She had opened it and found his picture. She felt so sad that she decided to call him, but he was not at home. She called his cell phone, no answer. Then she heard her plane being called. “Come on Amy.” Her mom said. As she boarded the plane she looked out of the window and saw Zack. She was so surprised. “ Zack! Over here!” She said with excitement. Then he turned around and started waving at her. He said

“ I will miss you! Don’t forget to call!” Then he said “ I love you!” Amy did not respond because she was afraid. Then he turned around sadly because Amy did not say anything back.

The whole time she was on the plane she kept on thinking about her past, present, and future. Then she thought about Zack and what they could have done if they were still together. She was bored so she decided to write a poem to pass the time.

Feelings

Is this love that I feel for you? Is this love honest and true?

Is this love heaven sent to me? Was this love meant for you and me?

Should I give my heart to you, hoping that you will give yours too?

Should I give my heart away, or save for some other day?

Are we even supposed to be together? Will this relationship last forever?

Will we be together the rest of our lives? Will I grow up to be your wife?

So many feelings running through my mind, which ones are real which ones are make believe? If this were a test I would be making all D’s.

Where are these feelings coming from? I am unsure if you are the one.

Do I express feelings I don’t really feel? When will I know when these feelings are real?

Is this love that I feel now? I never knew love had so much power.

If this were love I would not be so unsure, is it because I am a bit insecure?

I guess I will wait for my feelings to be true, maybe this love will be for you.

After 8 hours it was time to get off of the plane. Her mom had a place already rented and ready to be moved into. It had every thing. The thing that made Amy happy was that she had a telephone ready. Amy picked up the phone and called Zack and told him how New York was like so far. Her mom had wanted her to help her do something so she had to get off the phone. She said “ Zack, I have to go, my mom wants me to do something for her, I will call you as soon as I can.” Then she said in hesitation “ Zack, I love you.” Then he said “I love you too.” Then she hung up the phone with a smile on her face.

After 9 years of living in New York she really enjoyed it. She talked to her father every once in a while, but enough to know what was going on.

One day she received a knock on her door. She answered it. It was Zack! He came with a dozen roses. She started to cry. Then he said “When I told you I loved you I meant it.” Then he knelt down and said “ Amy, I have loved you for 9 years and I want to be with you the rest of my life, will you marry me?”

Then Amy said “Yes, I will, I will!” Then he picked her up in his arms and swung her around in circles. They got married the next year. All her friends were there, even Emily. After the wedding she saw her mom and dad talking then she saw her dad kiss her mom’s forehead. Then they walked off holding hands. Then she heard her dad say “I love you will you take me back?” Then her mom said “ Thanks for the offer, but I am moving on, David, meet my new husband Gary.” They shook hands and then her father walked away with a sad look on his face then her mother gave a look that said “Good for you.” Then the couples walked into the sunlight with smiles across their faces.

It is amazing to think that a person could fall in love at a young age and still have that feeling for such a long time. I guess that when Zack said “I love you.” He meant that those words would last forever no matter how far that Amy went.
