Aspirations Of A DJ by Daniel Thornton

In this day and age, it’s not so easy to become a nationally or even locally known deejay.  Some fail to realize the skill that goes into deejaying.  It’s not easy.

Going back to when I first got into the deejaying scene, I don’t remember following any certain deejay.  At that time, I didn’t understand how important the DJ was to the party.

All that changed the night I attended an all night Rave.  The headlining DJ was Paul Van Dyke, a well known DJ from Germany.  When I first walked to the stage, I was immediately pumped.  The huge speaker cabinets were so loud, I felt the vibration all over my body.  Suddenly, he mixed in my favorite track.  It was over.  My body was no longer against the wall.  It was on top of the speaker.  Before I knew it, he mixed in a new track, dropping into the most beautiful breakdown.  The thing that really set it off for me was at 11:50 PM, ten minutes before the New Year, he mixed this track that slowly got calmer until the baseline was all that was left to rattle the speakers.  The whole crowd cheers, as anticipation ran through all of us.  We began the countdown to the New Year.  With five seconds left in the countdown, the track starts to build slowly.  It continues to build.  Suddenly, the base stops.  All you hear is melody.  The crowd cheers.  But at midnight, the DJ let loose the track at full blast as we all cheer and dance. Goosebumps went up my whole body.

It was on that night that I realized the DJ creates the vibe of the party.  The DJ takes you through the elements of different genres of music.  They make you feel what they’re feeling.  They control the crowd.  This can only be done by effectively matching the beats and mixing the records on measure.  So many times I’ve seen people DJ and have thought to myself, “I know I’m at least as good as this guy, if not better.”  I’m sure if I start to really promote myself something will come along.  But in this business, it’s not what you can do as a DJ, but who you know.  It’s not always like that, but mostly it is.  That makes it so hard on me.  But you know what?  All I need is time.  Time will let me perfect my skills.  When the time is right, I’ll be ready to blow this scene up.
